Faith and Science for the Classroom: Atypical Topics

Quick – name two topics of importance involving science and the Christian Faith! Obviously, you picked creeping Gnosticism in our church bodies and magicians masquerading as scientists. Right?Or did you actually say, ‘The Age of the Earth and Evolution?’ Those are important topics to be sure, but highly satisfactory books and articles have already addressed those topics. The culture is shifting under our feet rapidly, and young people are facing a world entirely different than the cultural environment in which our Creation vs. Evolution apologetics structure was crafted. It is also likely that these changes will continue and even intensify. We have a population collapse on the horizon in my children’s lifetime and unimaginably wealthy tech titans intent on ushering in a world that closely resembles a cyberpunk dystopia. It is as if the leaders of technology, academia, and industry all watched Blade Runner and thought to themselves that this, indeed, was the world they wanted to live in. Among all this, Christians must be vigilant - watching against the coming of old false doctrines dressed in new clothes as well as entirely novel moral quandaries.The goal of this book is twofold: first, it is meant as a resource for students on how to work through and address the new ideas they will face in our modern dystopia. Second, it aims to cover some of the topics that are increasingly important as our world changes rapidly around us. This is a book for students, so it begins by giving them a guide on how to think and discuss Faith and science. These are called first principles. . From there the student will learn how to ask the right question. These first two sections are essential building blocks to productive thought and discussion. From there, the book moves into specific topics such as addressing miracles, pharmaceuticals, scientific thinking and interpreting signs, abiogenesis, Alchemy, and scientific research that toys with human genetics.Since the book is also intended as a teaching textbook, it contains multiple student assignments for each chapter. Finally, the last section of the book, only available digitally, is a ‘Teacher’s Manual’ which contains classroom activities, grading advice, and further explanations that teachers and homeschool parents alike will find very useful as they discuss these topics with their students.
