Upon entering World War I, the US Army had scarce, outdated machine-guns. On the Western Front, American soldiers, known as Doughboys, had to borrow guns from French allies. The US War Department then commissioned John Moses Browning's M1917 design, ordering 45,000 units. This heavy machine-gun, though bulkier than lighter models, had a formidable firing rate and served through World War II.
