Math Mammoth Grade 5-A Worktext (2023 edition) is the first student book for 5th grade mathematics, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 5 Curriculum.Please note: this is the black-and white version, with grayscale interior pages.Being a worktext means that the book contains both the instruction (the "text") as well as the exercises (the "work"), all written directly to the student. This makes it where many students can study independently from the book.FeaturesMath Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so your children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much.The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual, nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext, and there also exist accompanying videos where you can see Maria herself teach the material.Very little teacher preparation is required. Concepts are often explained with visual models, followed by exercises using those models. These visual models can take the place of manipulatives for many children; however, it is very easy to add corresponding manipulatives to the lessons if so desired.After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice.This book, student worktext 5-A, covers the four basic operations (chapter 1), large numbers (chapter 2), problem solving (chapter 3), decimals (chapter 4), and graphing (chapter 5). The rest of the topics are covered in the 6-B worktext.The first chapter covers operations with whole numbers (e.g. multi-digit multiplication and long division with two-digit divisors). We also study divisibility, factors, and prime factorization.In chapter 2, the focus is on large numbers and using a calculator.Then, in chapter 3, we study simple equations and problem solving, using a pan balance and bar models.Chapter 4 is about decimals and some operations with decimals. We focus on place value, addition & subtraction of decimals, and multiplication & division of decimals by whole numbers.Then, in chapter 5, students study the coordinate plane (first quadrant only), patterns in the coordinate grid, line graphs, and the concept of average.The second half of 5th grade mathematics is covered in the Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext, available separately.
