Mrs. Sigourney: The Sweet Singer of Hartford, (Paperback)

"Mrs. Sigourney: The Sweet Singer of Hartford" is a definitive biography of Lydia Huntley Sigourney, one of the most prolific and popular American poets of the nineteenth century. Often referred to as the "Sweet Singer of Hartford," Sigourney's influence on the literary landscape of her time was immense, and Gordon S. Haight's study provides a thorough examination of her life and the cultural context of her fame.
The work explores Sigourney's rise to prominence, her extensive body of poetry and prose, and her role as a professional woman writer in an era when such a path was fraught with challenges. Haight delves into her personal history, her philanthropic efforts, and the social circles of Hartford that shaped her career. Lydia Sigourney was a household name, known for her sentimental and moralistic verse that resonated deeply with the Victorian sensibilities of her audience.

This biography serves as a vital resource for understanding the development of American literature and the role of women within it. It sheds light on the mechanisms of nineteenth-century celebrity and the lasting impact of a writer who, though her style fell out of fashion, remains a key figure in the history of American letters.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
