The Apple Box — artist series - ABS Mara De Luca

Mara De Luca - The artist series.

The Apple Box is a familiar sight on film and photography sets, a versatile tool that is pressed into endless service as a seat, step ladder, table, pedestal. We have elevated it to icon status, like Le Corbusier, but rendering it in Baltic birch plywood with rich color on all sides. This simple form evokes the sleek minimalism of Judd and the palette of Barragán.

This Apple Box however, is even more special. A 1/1 edition, featuring one panel painted by the Spanish artist Antonio Murado.

Mara De Luca is a young painter of great promise. De Luca was a resident artist at the Monira foundation in 2022 and has presented solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and New York. On the occasion of De Luca’s upcoming exhibition at TOTAH, artist and Rail Editor-at-Large Tom McGlynn paid a visit to De Luca’s studio. They engaged in a wide-ranging conversation about the “critical core” of De Luca’s work, the influence of the West Coast on her practice, and by what means the painting can invent itself.
